The more comfortable you become the less likely you are to hold onto your mouthpiece for dear life. You should practice doing this for a few minutes before going inside the water.

A well fitted mouthpiece is the difference between a relaxed jaw and one that is extremely stressed. Mouthpieces that are not custom fitted will often be too small or large. As a result, your jaw muscles work overtime in order to compensate for the difference. Initially this may not seem like a big deal; however, if you take part in longer dives, then this will eventually become painful.
